Parkit Explains

What Do Parking Zones A, B and C Mean?

Same letter – different rules. Here’s how to read them right. Many cities and parking operators in Sweden divide areas into zones to control prices, time limits and parking rules. Letters like A, B, and C usually indicate how central and expensive the area is — but the system isn’t standardised nationwide. Here’s a quick guide so you can read the sign, not guess it.

The Basic Principle (in Most Cities)

<div class="knowledge-table"><div class="knowledge-table_header"><div class="knowledge-table_header-cell">Zone</div><div class="knowledge-table_header-cell">Typical Meaning</div><div class="knowledge-table_header-cell">Common Traits</div></div><div class="knowledge-table_row"><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Zone A</div><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Most central</div><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Highest hourly rate, shortest time limit, often includes evenings/weekends</div></div><div class="knowledge-table_row"><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Zone B</div><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Near the city centre</div><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Medium rate, moderate time limit</div></div><div class="knowledge-table_row"><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Zone C</div><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Outer areas</div><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Lowest rate, longer or free evenings/weekends</div></div></div>

Think of A–C as near–mid–far.
But remember: the details always depend on the local sign and app.

How to See Which Zone You’re In

  • On the parking sign: e.g. “P Avgift – Zon B – 9–18”
  • In the app: When using Betala P, Parkster, or EasyPark, the zone appears when you select or enter the zone code.
  • On area entry signs: In larger parking zones, an entrance sign shows the general rules for the whole area.

Rule: The sign at your exact spot always overrides all other information.

Warning: A/B/C Doesn’t Mean the Same Everywhere

Different cities use different systems:

  • Stockholm: Uses Zone 1–3 (numbers), not letters.
  • Gothenburg / Malmö: Use colour or letter zones, but prices and times vary between districts.
  • Private lots or garages: A/B/C may refer to price levels, floors, or sections — always check the sign.
  • Residential parking: Uses area codes (e.g. S2, N3) instead of A/B/C.

Bottom line:
The letter is just a label — the fine print (times, days, max stay, fees, and exceptions) tells the real story.

How to Read a Zone Sign Correctly (Checklist)

Letter + text: “Zon B – Avgift” = zone and that a fee applies
Times: “9–18” = weekdays, “9–14” = Saturdays, “(9–18)” = Sundays/public holidays
Max time: “2 tim” overrides all other rules during those hours
Exceptions: “Boende [code]” or icons (charging, disabled parking, etc.)
Arrows: show where the zone rule starts and ends

If unsure, always assume the strictest condition during the stated times.

App Guide in 30 Seconds

  1. Turn on location or enter the zone code from the sign
  2. Check price, time limits, and hours in the app
  3. Start parking and set a reminder
  4. Stop the session when you leave — especially in Zone A with high rates

💡 Most common fine: wrong zone in the app.
Always match the zone code on the sign with the zone in the app.

EVs, Residents, and Zone Exceptions

  • Charging stations: Usually require active charging plus a parking fee. Zone tariffs apply in addition to the electricity cost (kWh).
  • Residential parking: Has its own digital permit — the zone letter doesn’t always apply.
  • Disabled parking: May allow free or extended parking on municipal land — but private areas may differ. Always check the sign.

Common Misunderstandings (and the Reality)

<div class="knowledge-table"><div class="knowledge-table_header"><div class="knowledge-table_header-cell">Misunderstanding</div><div class="knowledge-table_header-cell">Correct Explanation</div></div><div class="knowledge-table_row"><div class="knowledge-table_cell">“Zone C = free at night”</div><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Sometimes, but only if the sign says so</div></div><div class="knowledge-table_row"><div class="knowledge-table_cell">“A/B/C means the same everywhere”</div><div class="knowledge-table_cell">No — every city has its own system</div></div><div class="knowledge-table_row"><div class="knowledge-table_cell">“Residents park free in their zone”</div><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Residential permits are separate</div></div><div class="knowledge-table_row"><div class="knowledge-table_cell">“Charging spots = free parking”</div><div class="knowledge-table_cell">Usually both parking and charging fees apply</div></div></div>

Quick Routine Every Time You Park

  1. Read the letter
  2. Check times and max duration
  3. Look for exceptions or symbols
  4. Enter the correct zone code in the app
  5. Set a reminder
  6. End your parking on time

Two extra seconds reading the sign can save you 900–1,200 SEK in fines.

Parkit’s Perspective

Zones are meant to create fairness and flow — not confusion.
Our mission is to make the logic behind signs understandable and parking predictable,
no matter whether the zone is called A, B, C or 1–3.

When you understand the zone, you control the cost — not the other way around.
