Where You’re Not Allowed to Park – A Simple Guide to Parking Bans and Unwritten Rules

We know, parking rules in Sweden can feel like a minefield. But they exist for a reason: to keep streets safe, accessible and fair. Here’s where you can’t park, why – and what the law actually says.

The Golden Rule: Don’t Block or Obstruct

At the heart of all parking regulations is one simple idea:

You may never park in a way that blocks or disturbs traffic.

This applies everywhere, even if no sign is posted.

Places You May Not Park

In front of a driveway or entrance

You may not park so that someone can’t drive in or out — this includes private garages, courtyards and company entrances.

Too close to a junction

You must park at least 10 meters (about 30 feet) from an intersection.
This ensures visibility for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

At or near a pedestrian crossing

No parking on or within 10 meters before a crosswalk.
Pedestrians must always have a clear line of sight.

On sidewalks or cycle paths

Parking on or partly on a walkway or cycle lane is always forbidden — no exceptions.

In or near an intersection

Even small side streets count as intersections. Keep at least 10 meters distance.

At or in front of a bus stop

Parking is prohibited 20 meters before and 5 meters after the “Busshållplats” sign.

In a loading zone

Applies during the times listed on the sign — typically 07:00–17:00 weekdays.

Near crossings, tunnels or bridges

You may not park where you block visibility or access to a crossing, railway, tunnel or bridge.

In disabled parking spaces without a valid permit

Parking here without authorization can lead to heavy fines or towing.

Special Situations

  • Snow removal: Municipalities can introduce temporary parking bans during winter.
  • Night parking: Some areas prohibit parking between 00:00–06:00 to allow street cleaning.
  • Private property: Rules still apply, but the property owner sets the conditions.

Remember: even “just a quick stop” in the wrong place can block an ambulance, a waste truck or a visually impaired pedestrian.

Parking Signs That Indicate a Ban

  • A blue circle with a red diagonal line means “No parking.”
  • Two red diagonal lines mean “No stopping.”
Always read the additional signs – they show specific times, days or exceptions.

Digital Technology Reduces Mistakes

Most parking violations don’t happen out of malice – they happen out of confusion.
With digital parking permits and smart systems, we can reduce misunderstandings and make streets safer.

Parkit’s technology makes it possible to:

  • Automatically identify vehicles (ANPR cameras)
  • Verify digital permits instantly
  • Communicate local rules clearly to residents and visitors

It’s not about punishment – it’s about helping everyone share public space responsibly.

Parking With Care

Parking is, at its core, about respect
Respect for traffic flow, for the person who needs the spot more than you,
and for the city we all share.

At Parkit, we believe that clear rules, digital tools and education create fairer and safer streets.
We don’t explain rules to lecture people – we explain them so fewer people get caught out.
