Parkit Explains

How Digital Parking Surveillance Works

Digital parking surveillance has become the new standard in Sweden. But how does it actually work? Behind what looks like an ordinary parking space lies a network of cameras, sensors, software, and legal safeguards working together. Here’s how the system functions — and what really happens to your data.

What “Digital Surveillance” Really Means

Digital parking surveillance means that cameras, sensors, or connected systems automatically check parking conditions — instead of people walking around issuing paper tickets.

It’s not “surveillance” in the traditional sense — it’s automated verification:

  • Does the vehicle have a valid permit?
  • Has parking been paid for?
  • Is it parked in the correct zone and within the allowed time?

It’s not eyes watching — it’s logic comparing data.

How It Works Technically

A complete digital monitoring system usually includes three main components:

1. ANPR Cameras (Automatic Number Plate Recognition)

  • Capture licence plates at entry and exit.
  • Check against permits, payment records, or guest lists.

2. Sensors

  • Detect whether a space is occupied (via radar, infrared, or ground sensors).
  • Often used in garages or EV charging zones.

3. Cloud Systems / Control Applications

  • Collect and analyse all data.
  • Determine each vehicle’s status: “Valid,” “Unpaid,” or “Wrong zone.”
  • Provide real-time updates to parking operators, property owners, or enforcement teams.

Together, they form an ecosystem that replaces manual checks with real-time data and accuracy.

From Licence Plate to Decision – Step by Step

  1. You drive into the parking area.
  2. The camera reads your licence plate (ANPR).
  3. The system checks if there’s a valid permit or active payment.
  4. If yes → you’re all set.
If no → the vehicle is flagged automatically.
  5. A digital or physical parking attendant receives a notification.

For most drivers, nothing seems to happen — and that’s the goal.
The system should be invisible when it works.

Digital Monitoring and Parking Apps

When you start a parking session in an app such as EasyPark, Parkster, or Parkit,
the time is automatically linked to your licence plate.

The system recognises your car and verifies your parking without a paper ticket.
No printouts, no dashboard slips — just the right vehicle in the right place.

Privacy and Data Protection (GDPR)

Digital surveillance involves handling personal data — your licence plate, time, and location.
That’s why it follows the same rules as camera surveillance under the GDPR:

  • Purpose must be clear (e.g. fee control or permit management).
  • Data retention must be limited — usually 24–72 hours.
  • Access is logged — who viewed what, and when.
  • Clear signage must be visible on site.
  • Encryption is used for all transmission and storage.

At Parkit, we follow a “Privacy by Design” principle — technology that respects personal data from the ground up.

Example: How Digital Monitoring Saves Time and Money

A housing association with 120 parking spaces:

  • Before: manual control, ~10–12 hrs/month of admin and several complaint cases each week.
  • After: digital system (ANPR + digital permits): < 2 hrs/month, 80% fewer complaints,
plus improved occupancy data and easier contract handling.

When the technology handles the routine, people can focus on what really matters.

The Future of Digital Monitoring

This is only the beginning.
Future parking systems will integrate with:

  • EV charging – pay for both parking and electricity in one app.
  • Smart sensors – real-time availability of spaces.
  • AI-based analysis – pattern recognition and traffic flow optimisation.
  • Shared spaces – one area serving cars, bikes, and deliveries at different times.

Digital monitoring isn’t just a tool — it’s the foundation of future urban mobility.

Parkit’s Perspective

We believe in technology that creates fairness, safety, and simplicity — not surveillance.
Digital parking is about saving time, reducing conflict, and using space more efficiently.

When systems work quietly in the background, the city runs smoothly in the foreground.
