How Residential Parking Works

What Is Residential Parking?

It’s a digital parking permit linked to your licence plate and your home address.
It applies to streets marked for residential parking in your area (for example N2, S3, B, C).
No paper permit or sticker is needed.

Basic requirements (usually):

• You are registered as living in the area.
  
• You own, lease, or have authorised use of the car (proof required).
  
• The vehicle is taxed, inspected, and within legal size/weight limits.
  

Think of it like this:

How to Get a Residential Parking Permit – Step by Step

1. Check your municipality
   Search “boendeparkering [your city]” to see your city’s specific conditions.
   
2. Apply online
   Log in with BankID or digital ID. Enter your address, licence plate, and proof of ownership or lease.
   
3. Activate your permit
   Once approved, the permit is automatically linked to your licence plate — no physical tag needed.
   
4. Pay
   Usually monthly, either by invoice or directly in the parking app.
   
5. Park correctly
   Park only on streets marked with your area code (for example “Boende N2”) and follow the posted time limits.
   

What Does It Cost?

The fee is set by your local municipality, and prices vary depending on the area or zone.
Typically, it’s a fixed monthly fee, lower than the regular hourly rate in the same district.

Remember:

• Parking fees may still apply at certain hours or locations — always check the sign.
  
• Some cities have different prices for electric or low-emission vehicles.
  
• Permits don’t apply on private property unless explicitly stated on the sign.
  

How to Read the Signs

Example:
“Boende N2 – Avgift 9–18 (9–14) – Max 24 tim”

Means:

• Applies to residents in area N2
  
• Fee applies 9–18 on weekdays, 9–14 on Saturdays, and ( ) = Sundays/holidays
  
• Maximum time applies during these hours — otherwise, the general 24-hour rule applies

Apps and Residential Parking

Most Swedish cities use digital parking apps (such as Betala P, EasyPark, or Parkster).
When you park, simply select the residential rate in the app — it recognises your active permit automatically.

Tips:

• Make sure the correct vehicle is registered in the app (a common mistake).
  
• Set a reminder to extend or end your session.
  
• If you change cars, update your licence plate in your resident profile.
  

Residential Parking and EV Charging

A residential permit allows you to park in your zone — but charging spots have extra rules:
